Faith, Hope, and Love: The Work of Presence

In Beezlebub’s Tales to his Grandson, Gurdjieff identifies faith, hope, and love as sacred impulses that can guide a seeker on their path to self-perfection. According to Gurdjieff, however, one’s experience of these impulses is inevitably distorted by factors such as pride, suggestibility, and social conditioning. In order to experience these sacred impulses in their reality, it is necessary to continuously question and examine our experience.  The primary means that Gurdjieff recommends for enabling this type of questioning is “remorse of conscience.”

What is conscience, and how does it relate to the sacred impulses of faith, hope, and love?  What would it mean for conscience to be a steady companion in one’s everyday life? In this exchange, we will discuss the different types of faith, hope, and love that Gurdjieff expounds in Beezlebub’s Tales.  Our hope is that participants will be both challenged and inspired to work towards a real taste of faith, hope, and love.
